The purpose of the Canadian Graduate Scholarships – Master (CGS M) program is to support the development of research skills and the development of top talent by supporting students who depict brilliant performance in their undergraduate and early graduate studies. The Canada Graduate Scholarships Master program provides financial support to highly qualified scientists who are involved in an eligible Master’s or in some cases Ph.D. program in Canada. The scholarships allow these scientists to fully concentrate on their studies in their chosen fields.
Eligibility Criteria to Apply for Canada Graduate Scholarships
To be eligible for the Canada Graduate Scholarships Master program, you must
- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada, or a protected person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) on the application deadline.
- be enrolled in, or have applied for, or will be applying for, full-time admission* to an eligible graduate program at the master’s or doctoral level at a Canadian institution with a CGS M allocation*
- follow the internal deadline for submitting an application for admission to your intended degree program – for more detailed information, contact the Faculty of Graduate Studies (or its equivalent) of the selected Canadian institution(s)
- completed by December 31 of the year of application
- either between 0 and 12 months of full-time study (or full-time equivalent) in the program for which you are applying for funding,** which can be one of the following:
- Master’s program
- a doctoral program that you enter directly from an undergraduate program without ever being enrolled in any graduate program (direct entry)
- combined master’s-doctoral program
- master’s program that transfers to an eligible doctoral program, either before or after activation of the award, without the award of a master’s degree (accelerated)
- master’s program for which the degree requirements will be met before the end of the award, allowing the award to continue into an eligible doctoral program
- or between 4 and 12 months of full-time study (or full-time equivalent) in an eligible master’s program for which the degree requirements will be met before the award is activated, allowing it to be activated within the first 12 months of the subsequent doctoral program for which you are applying for funding
- either between 0 and 12 months of full-time study (or full-time equivalent) in the program for which you are applying for funding,** which can be one of the following:
- have not held or currently hold a CGS M fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC
- have achieved a first-class average determined by the host institution in each of the last two completed years of study (full-time equivalent)
- submit a maximum of one fellowship (Master or PhD) or fellowship application per academic year to CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC
- Note: If more than one application is submitted, the eligible application submitted first chronologically will be retained
Study eligibility program
An eligible graduate program must include a significant research component leading to the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital, and/or exhibit that is evaluated as merit/expert at the institutional level. program completion.
Joint professional degree programs (such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/MA, JD/PhD, MBA/PhD, MA/MBA) as well as clinically focused degree programs, including clinical psychology, are eligible if they have a significant autonomous research component as described above.
Master’s programs that are based on coursework only are usually ineligible because they do not include a significant research component as described above.
Eligible Places of Possession and Awards Distribution
Without exception, the CGS M award can only be defended at eligible Canadian institutions. Eligible Canadian institutions receive allocations of Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s (CGS M) awards that correspond to the number of students to whom they can offer awards each year on behalf of federal granting agencies. Field of research and subject eligibility
CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC support and promote high-quality research in a wide range of disciplines and areas, which are divided into broad research areas (health, natural sciences and engineering, and social sciences and humanities). This includes research that combines two or more disciplines or that requires the skills of several disciplines.
You must make sure that you are submitting your application to an institution that has an assigned area of research that you intend to pursue. Application Process of Canada Graduate Scholarships
To apply to the Canada Graduate Scholarships Master program, you must fill out and send an application to up to three institutions using the Research Portal. Complete the application carefully by following the instructions. Once an application has been submitted, no changes or updates can be made to the application before or after the deadline.

Deadline for the Canada Graduate Scholarships
The deadline for Canada Graduate Scholarships Master program applications is December 1 until 8:00 p.m. (ET).
